Global Warning

Once upon a time, a murderous thief assaulted a young woman with a huge machete. A crowd protested, “That huge blade will kill her with a single blow.” The thief, moved a bit by the plea, took out a thin stiletto dagger and proceeded to kill her more slowly with multiple stab wounds. The people standing around now exclaimed, “Oh, that’s much better. Now she can now live a few seconds longer.”

Former Vice President Al Gore has released his well-intentioned documentary An Inconvenient Truth about the dangers of burning fossil fuels in today’s world. The film’s warning is that “global warming”, a gradual yearly increase in temperatures, is putting the balance of the Earth’s cycles topsy-turvy. As a response, many cities are now “going green” by using buses and taxis that supposedly cause less air pollution. Gore’s advice to each household is to exchange those old appliances that soak up “too much” power for new ones that soak up a little less power. Let the land survive for one generation longer, as we charge our great-great-grandchildren with the burden of solving the problems we’ve caused, so they aren’t the last people to eke out subsistence in man’s war on Nature. That way, the planet will remain a bit longer before the rampant desecration of Mother Bhumi in the form of unnecessary drilling and burning of petroleum by-products totally destroys the productivity of the soil and the sky, leaving the world we live in one big barren oil slick. (As predicted in Shrimad Bhagavatam!)

Sure, Al Gore may be riding on the right tracks, but it’s a long, long way down the line from Grand Central Station to the Wide Open Spaces. In truth, his solution only smacks of more consumerism, more $$$$, and is really no solution at all. Advice that boils down to “go out and buy new useless appliances and to use less energy longer” only serves to make the industrial “powers-that-be” richer and richer. It also buys them time to create newer and newer “Earth-saving technology.”

It all serves to remind me of President Eisenhower’s last words of advice sixty years ago: “Beware the (growing) government-industrial complex.” Remember, mankind lived for millions of years (not thousands as rascal evolutionists claim!) without American technology to “give them a better world.”

If the esteemed and learned ex-VP really wants to help the earth survive this demonic “civilization” of Kali Yuga that is based upon the four pillars of sin (meat-eating, etc.), then he will immediately add a study of the books of Shrila Prabhupada to his research. He will encourage a world-wide vegetarian diet while educating the public about the usefulness of the cow and the bull in promoting varnashram dharma. This will create a domino effect as the horrible slaughter houses and meat chain restaurants begin to close. We have heard enough about vacuum cleaners that use less power. Refrigeration units for the transport of dead animal carcasses to horrible fast food restaurants all over the world are another major source of energy loss that Mr. Gore has not addressed.

If Mr. Gore has a problem locating the books of our spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, then I will herewith refer him to the following address: Brahmananda’s Book Bazaar, Swami Bhaktivedanta Marg, opp Shri Krishna-Balarama Mandir of ISKCON, Raman Reti, Vrindavana, (Distt. Mathura), U.P., India. One last word of advice, Mr. Gore. While buying your books from Brahmananda and Gargamuni, get some tulasi beads and ask them to teach you to chant:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.
